The autumn rains hide
the sun. They water
the weeds and grass,
feed the trees,
and bathe the cat.
In the early evening,
we sit still on our sofa
to catch the news,
while the day slips
into the shadow
of night as the toads
in the underbrush
break the silence
with their echoing calls.
